All things being equal, I suppose the following story could have happened. Everyday life can offer things that even our best comedic writers would be hard pressed to create and this story is no exception. Besides, it's on the Internet so it must be true.
Late one Saturday afternoon a man was walking his dog near Branch Lake in Maine. The owners Yorkshire Terrier was apparently involved in some sort of scuffle with another dog at the park so he decided that the best thing to do was to scoop up his dog and put him in the cab of his truck. His terrier was having nothing to do with this and fought him quite a bit as he separated his dog from the other. While the owner of the terrier was discussing what had just transpired with the owner of the other dog he turned and noticed his terrier was bouncing all over the place in his truck making himself quite noticeable. Somehow the little guy had managed to bounce around enough, so much so, he engaged the gear … causing the truck to roll about 75 feet into the lake, and bounce off a rock before sinking in roughly 10 feet of water.
A friend of the family saw what had happened and immediately jumped in the lake to rescue the Yorkshire terrier and bring him to safety. Happy ending for sure, well almost. After needing a tow truck to remove his rig, hundreds of dollars in repairs from the water damage, maybe there was a little something to sneer about.
I guess at the end of the day, the lesson learned here is, don't put your dog in a car when they are upset, otherwise they might somehow engage the gear and go for a ride. With or without you.
